WS-6-MINI Reboots

Wed Apr 06, 2016 5:30 pm

We bought 4 WS-6-MINI and 3 of them are rebooting with the latest firmware. By the time we get to our tower they sometimes have reset them self or require a manual reboot.

Anybody have a clue we are only using 3 ports 1 UBNT 520 AC and 2 UBNT NB-25

How are you powering them?

Be specific on the method used to power them. If it is a POE brick what POE brick are you using?

Sounds like you are not getting enough power.

Any possibility they are losing AC power for a second?

Are they on a good UPS?

If on a UPS when your there pull AC power and then plug it in and see if the condition is replicated which would indicate a bad UPS.

If power blips off and then back on too fast (less than 5 seconds) the switch can be not all the way powered down before power is restored and since the board was not completely discharged it can lock it up or boot up in a weird state. This is easily replicated on a bench. PLug in a WS-6-MINI and have it power a couple radios. Then pull the barrel adapter and plug it right back in fast. Most times it will either be locked up or boot in a "weird" state. When I say weird if you log into the UI it may show POE power applied to a port but no power is coming out of that port.

If you pull the power from a switch you need to give it a good 5+ seconds before re-applying power or you can see this condition.

OK so say a max of 12 watts for each radio at peak transmitting so 12w x 3 radios = 36w watts MAX for the radios
Efficiency of 50V to 24V is 90%+ so (worst case) 40w

WS-6-MINI uses at most 6 watts

So 46 watts MAX

Should be fine.

You did not modify the power adapter cord and extend it did you?

What environment are these switches installed at?

What temperatures are the switches reporting when they are running?

Power adapter cords are unmodified. They are in ventilated cabinets mounted to 3" masts. Board temp is around 53, cpu 76, phy 79.

We have 2 at this site running off the same power feed. 1 has been stable but I am getting this in the log about once a day:
Apr 7 07:08:25 switch[1258]: 3V is out of range (3.5V)

The power feed is a large solar setup ( about 20kw ) going to a Outback inverter. I would think if it was power drops we would be seeing it on both.

When the failure occurs the radios are staying powered but no data will pass through the switch. Sometimes after about 15 mins it will start working again and the switch will have a very short uptime, other times I have to pull the power.

Yea we increased the 3.3V range to prevent those error reports in v1.4.0rc9, 3.5 is acceptable.
Upgrade the switch to v1.4.0rc9 and that error about 3.5V being out of range will go away.

I mean it "could" be bad switches, the best way to tell would be to swap the switch with a spare and replace the power adapter and if the problem is still there then I "doubt" it is the switch or power adapter?

It "could" also be a bad radio that for some reason draws too much power and causes a dip in power and makes the switch sort of reboot?

Obviously something is wrong at this site the question is what, could it be the switch, yes.

At this point I do not know what to tell you.

Do you have pictures of these towers?

It helps if I can visualize your setup.

I think we are going to order another couple mini's. Then we can see if the problem stays. It is really odd. It will be fine for a few weeks, then it locks.

Thanks !

Well please let me know, I am as stumped as you at this point.

If you swap them out and the problem goes away we can RMA them.

We ordered 2 WS-12-250-AC today to replace the ones that are rebooting .

We had to pull the Mini's and go back to a gig switch with POE adapters to see if we can get the system stabalized..
