WS-8-250 White Label

Wed Apr 27, 2016 5:06 pm

Chris - on the first batch of WS-8-250 w/ white label, I can access the switch management from any vlan and it "seems" like the vlans aren't being isolated from each other. I need to check the latter part of the statement out further to be sure but I can definitely access the switch management from any vlan. Is this normal on this first batch device? It is currently running 1.3.9 but same behavior on earlier versions as well.

Thanks,
Rob

All our switches use the same switch core VSC-742X and the switch design has never changed so the first switch we made and the last one made today all are the same switch wise and firmware wise.

The only things that have changed through the revisions are the POE stuff which is totally separate from the switching part.

Remember the switch core is a self contained chip, in our case the VSC-7427 like UBNT uses the BCM-53118 for the ToughSwitch.

We and they then use a reference design for the switch part and add things we want to the design like Passive POE current sensors and stuff but the switch core is as the chip maker lays out in their reference design and the switch core functions are handled with their code not ours we just configure it.

We then write the UI which configures the switch core and turns POE on and off and does things likes graphs and stats.

Basically I am saying that the original white label works exactly the same as any of our switches when your talking about the switch functions.

Now recently we are trying to BEEF up the switches in later revisions to "try" and make them more like indestructible tanks as I am having a hard time getting people to do proper grounding but this also would have nothing to do with switching functions. Will the new changes make a difference? Hard to tell, will take a year to get a sample of RMAs and compare them to the previous year. I sure hope so as we are going to be spending an average of $7 more per switch in an "attempt" to protect people from themselves when they do not do proper grounding.

The next revision in production is RevF and then later this summer RevG. Will it actually help??? Who knows but at least we are trying.

Thanks for the info. Wasn't sure if the initial batch of revision A was different. It seems to act a little different than the others but I'll spend some more time with it and see if I can sort it out.

Thx.
