WS-6-MINI Hardware Failure?

Fri Jun 30, 2017 1:14 pm

Team,

I have a WS-6-MINI that was successfully pre-configured before being installed on a light pole with 120VAC power in an enclosure, prior to that the switch had worked fine every time I fired it up, but since installing on the light power now all I get is a single solid green light on the first ethernet port.
I can not get any ethernet modulation on any port, switching out power supplies does not resolve the issue, moving the switch to known good power does not work. I have 2 other identical switches installed in an identical manner and they work fine so I was just looking for support to help determine if this is a failure on this switch and how to proceed from here.

Please Advise,

Chris

The green LED is a power on indicator. Have you tried a reset to factory? There is a small hole in the back for inserting a toothpick.

If you have given it time to boot and it never does, then RMA is your only option since the MINI doesn't have an exposed serial console.

DIdn't see the reset option in the field, I will try that first and let you know where it gets me.

Thank you!

I have tried option 3 so far (option 1 & 2 are not available to me), without success. I will try the "red" Option 4 factory default here shortly and advise. Thank you for your attention to this issue.

Best Regards,

Chris

The "Full" Factory reset seems to have done the trick, although I didn't see any light sequence I followed the instructions, let the switch sit for approx. 5 min and as soon as I plugged in I was getting ethernet modulation on the ports again and the Web GUI came up.

In this particular scenario, we have 2 other switches installed in identical situations, my only assumption is that this switch experienced a power surge or some similar event that caused this to happen. Is adding a surge protector on the power supply the only thing that could have been done to potentially prevent this from happening?

Best Regards,

Chris

At this point we are speculating.

I would say more of a power blip than a surge, do you have the switch on a UPS of some kind?

If the power turns on and off rapidly it an mess up the config and or flash.

Another possible issue could be ground current, is your electrical service ground rods bonded to your tower ground rods?

Here are some good posts on grounding:

Sorry for the delay in my response to help wrap this thread up. In essence I am confident this had nothing to do with any failure on the switch's part.

At this point we are speculating.
~ I agree, I wish I had better data to know more specifically what was the cause and how it could have been prevented but as it was it was a very simple fix and it only happened in one place I am convinced this was something external to the hardware that could have been prevented (possibly with just a UPS), just want to make sure we are recommending best practice as we have a lot of customers with applications like this ~

I would say more of a power blip than a surge, do you have the switch on a UPS of some kind?
~I am inclined to agree, and on this particular the customer did not~

If the power turns on and off rapidly it an mess up the config and or flash.
~Somewhat obvious in hindsight but that's good to know~

Another possible issue could be ground current, is your electrical service ground rods bonded to your tower ground rods?
~This was installed on a "railroad" style monopole with a bunch of LED's that is on a state trail in West Virginia, so I don't know any absolute answers but I would guess there is only one set of ground rods~

Thank you for all of the information and great help as always, I love your products and recommend them often!

Best Regards,

Chris
