Switch failed

Hiya Guys.

Any advice appreciated.

Had a 24v DC switch fail tonight. We installed it around a week ago and after around 1 hour it stopped requesting DHCP. I haven't had much chance to get out there until tonight. I tried to do a ubnt scan, nothing came up. I did a wires hark... Noting again.... So I rebooted it. The Power front light didn't come back on. There is a green Led on the main board and that's it.

When I got there I heard the fan running and stopping it was also switching fine.

Any recommendations?

Provide the MODEL, WS-??-??????

If it is a DC switch provide details on how you are powering it.

Provide firmware version running on the switch.

Did you use a serial console cable to connect to it and see if you could get console communications?

Is it on a a private IP or accessible to the WWW, if it is on a public IP are you using Access Control List?

Basically provide much more information.

12 250 dc.

Via a 24v battery bank.

The pwr light no longer comes on, I have attempted serial access and no luck.

No ethernet lights come on when you plug in.

Not sure on firmware, the switch was only delivered a mo th ago, so very like they latest version or the one just before.

None of our network has public IPs, completely private. It would have been issued via the local dhcp server.

Well then you need to RMA it.

There is a sheet of paper lying on top of the switch when you unpack it telling you the first thing you should do before deployment is check for newest firmware and read release notes.

You always upgrade before deployment as the firmware that comes on the unit is not always the newest or even close sometimes and here is why:

It takes 12-16 week to order in parts which include flash chips which are pre-flashed with firmware available at that time.

Then weeks in storage until SMT assembly in Toronto Canada.

Then shipped to USA for final assembly another week.

Boards can be in USA for months before assembly, testing, serialized, and boxed.

Then product sits in warehouse for up to several months until shipped to DIstributor or Customer.

Then could sit in Disti warehouse for a month or so before shipped to customer.

So it is very probable that firmware on unit is way out of date.

My average UBNT radio has 6-12 month out of date firmware when I get a new radio so why would be any different?


You say powered by battery bank but is the switch connected directly to battery bank or powered from charging controller?

Next is there electrical service on site and if so is the electrical service ground rods bonded to the tower and the the tower ground rods else you create a ground loop where AC ground current flows through the switch to the tower:

But who knows maybe it just failed?

Will not know until we tear it apart and find out why, which we provide a report and pictures of any damage we find and suggest how to avoid and a repair fee, or if it failed simply fix it and return it free.

The switch was on 1.5.2 - I don't like applying firmwares that have to be rushed. I'd rather run on a slightly older one that is stable. I also see minimal fixes and improvements on 1.5.4

Site is fully grounded and also has an entire earthing mesh grid. Its EX MOD site. the MOD NEVER skimp on Earthing.

Direct onto batteries as we find we get a more stable voltage.

we have another Netonix onsite and he is working fine.

Its odd, if say there was AC voltage which blew the switch, why would the Status light be illuminated on the board and why when I arrived would the switch be happily working away, just no user interface / control etc.

There is a HUGE differnce now with v1.5.5rc2, we had our programmers fly out here for a week and we work around the clock to solve many long standing issues.

v1.5.5 will be finalized soon but if I was any WISP I would run v1.5.5rc2 or newer as I am telling you and the release notes explain about some LONG standing bugs and issues we were never able to solve for years until we had all programmers and me in the same room working together.

As far as the green LED in front that is simply an LED connected to a board power supply, the SOC (the main chip) can be fried and that light will still light up. All the light does is tell you the board is getting power, that's it, it is not a diagnostic light simply I am getting power light.
