Firmware Upgrade Iteration

We have many switches on our network ranging in firmware from 1.4.7 - 1.5.5 what would the recommended update progress. I would really like to avoid going through each stable release one at a time. Can anyone shed some insight on this or point me to a previous post, I wasn't able to find anything.
