Ping Watchdog questions

Tue Jun 16, 2015 1:35 pm

I have a MINI with 1.3.0rc6 firmware. I have something plugged into port 2 that is not on battery backup so that it will fail when the power goes out. I have a ping watchdog setup notify me when it happens.

Today finally we had our first power outage since I set this up and I got my first email (worked just great), verified that it was indeed correct that we had no power and then I realized the ping watchdog will send me notifications every 5 minutes until we get the power back on. Is this expected behavior?

I had expected it to email me once when its pinging failed.

You can adjust the parameters and extend this time out.

Startup: 300 seconds - Period it waits after being started to actually count
Interval: 300 seconds - Period between pings
Failures: 3 count - consecutive failure count before triggered to notify or bounce a port POE

So with the above defaults it pings every 5 minutes, after 3 failed pings in a row (15 minutes) it will report a failure and continue to report each additional failure until a successful ping occurs then it would take 3 failures.

If we made it only report once and the email/text was not received then people would complain about that.

Me personally I would want to be reminded every 5 minutes that power is out.

The problem here is that everyone will want something different but if we put in so many options as to satisfy everyone then the UI becomes complicated. It is a SIMPLE monitoring function that is more meant to reboot equipment but can be used as a rudimentary alert.
