WS-6-MINI Keeps crashing/rebooting?

Tue Jun 07, 2016 1:46 pm

I have just installed a new WS-6-MINI at a small tower. This is my 4th MINI and my 8th Netonix switch in the field. I have never had any issues with a Netonix switch or the MINIs before, but now I am getting a very weird issue.

What I have is a AC-400 connected to a working fine MINI that then connects to a STA AC-400 at the other end that is powered by the new WS-Mini. What I am seeing is the AC-400 on the STA side loses its ethernet link and then a minute or two later the STA goes offline for quite a while. Once the STA comes back online it has an uptime of under 2 minutes. When I then logon to the MINI powering the STA it shows an uptime of >3 minutes.

Not sure what my issue is or where exactly to begin. Is it the AC-400 causing the switch to crash and reboot? Is it the switch that is causing the AC-400 to drop its ethernet link and then go offline?

The switch is powered by an Airfiber power supply with around 3 ft of shielded Cat5e cable. The AC-400 is connected to the switch by ~90ft of shielded Cat5e cable that was tested in the shop before deploying on the new tower. The power to the tower is currently on an extension cord while the site owner (who runs and owns an Electric shop) runs and installs the permanent site power which will then be hooked up to a UPS.

Switch is currently running 1.3.9 (1.4.1 was not final before I configured the switch week or so ago) and I am afraid to upgrade the FW if the switch keeps rebooting.

I am not sure what you want me to suggest, at this point you need to investigate what the cause is because my crystal ball is broken and I have not gone to Walmart to pickup a new one yet.

As I understand this you are powering a WS-6-MINI with an AF24 POE adapter with a 3 foot cable.

The WS-6-MINI is powering a single radio which is an airMAX AC 400mm PowerBeam.

You see the airMAX AC radio lose Ethernet connectivity then goes offline presumably it is rebooting along with the WS-6-MINI

Possible causes:
The AF24 POE adapter is bad - doubtful but possible?
You test this by swapping it out

The airMAX AC radio is bad - possibly but probably not?
You test this by swapping it out

The WS-6-MINI is bad - possible?
You test this by swapping it out

There is something in the config of te WS-6-MINI that is causing this or possibly the WS-6-MINI config is corrupted.
You double check the config making sure there is not scheduled port bounces or anything weird like that.

PLEASE UPGRADE THIS TO v1.4.2rc6 it is stable.
I would also suggest factory defaulting it and set it back up to make sure the config is not corrupted.

Also there have been some reported weirdness with AF radios and even airMAX AC radios with Pause Frame Storms which if this is the case the v1.4.2rc6 will alert you to this issue.

What I would try first is upgrade the firmware to v1.4.2rc6 then default it and then if that does not fix it then I would start swapping out parts to find the culprit.

Also you are not powering this airMAX radio in port 2 are you?

How long and how heavy gauge is the cord? I would worry about ground potential (voltage) shift.

1. Bad AF24 POE - I will try swapping it out. Probably not it.
2. AC radio is bad - I cannot swap it out as the radio needs a 90ft bucket crane to safely access and it costs $300 to do it. I will if that is the only thing left that it could be.
3. I will try a new WS-MINI, but it seems doubtful as well. The MINI I have deployed was deployed for over a month at another site where it worked fine, but had to be removed as the MINI would not talk Cisco specific Spanning Tree.

This switch is powering the AC-400 (backhaul) and 3 other APs. Two RocketM2s and 1 Rocket AC-lite.

Right now the AC-400 has been down for over 30 minutes and I will drive out to the tower to access the switch in a little while.

Probably less than 75ft and it seemed to be a fairly heavy duty cord. When I go out there I will look closer.

No. Port 2 is my management port while the Airmax radios are in ports 3-5.

Hmmmm

So you have verified the WS-6-MINI is rebooting as well as the radio?

If the WS-6-MINI is rebooting then it sounds like a power issue?

If the AC power is dipping down below 110V that could cause the POE adapter to possibly mess up?

More info. I have a MK RB750GL that is powered off the same extension cord and power source as the WS-MINI's AF24 POE adaptor. The RB750 has not rebooted once. It has an uptime of over 2 hours and 45 minutes while the WS-MINI just now came back online with a uptime of a little over 3 minutes.

This switch config is also a little different than my standard config. Usually I have port 1 of the mini as the trunk port to the router and port 6 as the backhaul POE port. All ports are then left as Untagged vlan 1.

What I did with this switch is the following.

Port 1 - Untagged vlan 99 - connected via the AF24 POE to the WAN port of the router (port 5 on router)
Port 2 - trunk port to tower router (port 4 on router) - Untagged vlan 1
Port 3- Rocket M2 AP - Untagged vlan 1 - isolated
Port 4- Rocket M2 AP - Untagged vlan 1 - isolated
Port 5- Rocket AC-lite - Untagged vlan 1 - isolated
Port 6 - AC-400 - Untagged vlan 99

Assuming what I described above is not confusing does anything listed appear to be such that it could crash the switch?
