Be careful guys. I just upgraded 5 of the 6 port mini switches with no problem...like the new features although the log is highlighting on two of my switches that board voltage is out of range (23.7v) however I have 48.7 volts on the board, so not sure how the 24 volt board can report as low?

The reason I said be careful is because I just flashed ws-12-250a and it never came back. The entire site is now down and I am about to drive 40 miles to find out what happened. The switch had the previous release of firmware and had upgraded fine last time.

Derek, sorry to hear this. I personally did hundreds of upgrades & they all came back fine. Real sorry you have to drive there. Please let me know if ok after you cycle power on switch, and can you tell me what OS you are using (ie. chrome, firefox, etc)?

I am getting nagged now in the log on the MINI. It is on the end of a buried 300 foot CAT5e run so voltage drop is to be expected.

I think the "48V is out of range" would normally be a one time alert but the i2c error and subsequent retry brings it back up.

Les, sorry, and yes, we have now realized we missed giving wider voltage range checks on the mini & will fix in next release.

I ran into 1 WS-12-250-AC RevD that now reports board Power under status as:

Board 48V 13.5V
Board 24V 6.7V
Board 3V 0.3V

This seems like a reporting problem, as the switch operates normally. Any suggestions?

Are you using any SFP modules?

I just tried a WS-12-250-AC Rev D & it reports voltages fine.

Ok. In the new software, how about making an amp reader too. I know, voltage and watts make the amps. But that calc could be done by the device so I just have to look...

And it serves a purpose. Example:

You have a tower that is supplied power over a long cable. The battery pack is at the bottom where the switch sits in top. While batteries are being charged, say 27,5 volts, the switch in top might read 26,5 Volts. Not so interesting, to know how much your devices consume you look at the Watts.... In calculating your battery capacity these watts compared with the volts give some amps that you use to see how long your battery pack will last when the mains drop. (Or on solar, when there is no sun..)

But now, when the mains drop, or the sun is gone, the battery voltage starts dropping. Since the watts stay the same your current will be higher than what you'd used to calculate the time life of your battery bank. And that gets worse the lower the voltage is going to be.
It could well be that when the voltage is dropped to around 24V the amps are that high that although your initial calculations would tell you your battery pack might last another 2 hours or so but since the amps are higher that might be falling back to only 1,5hr or less...

So a quick look at the amps might tell you more than just the watts (then never change) or the voltage.. (And asked before by someone, can the voltage be calibrated? I measure some .5V difference between the Switch and a multimeter.)

Oh, and what about a longer (weekly) power consumption graph (only the total would do). 30sec/5min/1hr is nice but doesn't serve a lot of purpose. Wifi radios tend to use more power while serving more clients/more throughput and special on Solar+battery operated towers its important to learn what the week-daily trend is in power consumption of the tower in relation to your battery pack and Solar panels.
Radio's usually have in their specs an max. power consumption, but what the real consumption is on a day/weekly base is much more interesting. But you can only find out if some database is maintained with a nice graph to look at...

But maybe I'm asking too much now...? (Or does it need more memory which is imposible in existing units and would drive the price up for new ones?)

As you point out, the voltage drop depends on amps. It will vary based on wire gauge and length of run so that needs to be plotted on a curve as it is non-linear.
