I will also say I honestly did not delve to deeply into your configuration but it is possible that some sort of loop occurring could cause this with RSTP?

If you do have a loop and are relying on RSTP to prevent it and provide failover but RSTP is not configured just right and not only on this switch but any other switch or router this switch can see on Layer 2 weird things can occur over time.

As I said I did not really wrap my mind around your config and have no idea if a loop is even possible but thought I would throw out there the possibility of a loop with RSTP that could be corrected by unplugging a cable like you did as it would cause RSTP to go through its blocking learning routine.

This is why gaining access to the switch when it is in the failed state especially the UI which is easier to read and see what all the RSTP port states are.

Pause frame storm control was enabled on both switches. I have since also enable loop protection on both.

I like the idea of the watchdog rule and will implement it.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I am fairly certain that I do not have a loop problem. Always possible, but I think very unlikely.

Also, I have not changed any of the defaults on the STP tab.
