WS-6-Mini Bricked

Mon Nov 30, 2015 6:39 pm

Unboxed the unit, set a static IP, logged into the box, started firmware upload, watched it apply, and it sits saying interface will come back when firmware update is finished.

I waited about 30 min with no change. The unit does not respond in any way, and has no serial port with which to try to recover?

Try depressing the default button on the back of the unit for about 20 seconds, the lights should all go green then red, once they go red let up on the reset button.

If that does not work email me at chris@netonix.com and request an RMA.

I moved this thread to a proper location.

Sending it back to distributor - I will let them hassle with RMA.

RMA's are not handled through the Distributors?

It's up to them if they return it for you but it is their risk as we repair defective or damaged units not replace them.

If you interrupted the power somehow during the upgrade there is no damage but they then have a unit they should not sale to public as "NEW".

Did you try a factory default?

Yes - the reset made all lights green and then all lights red and then no difference.

I'm not sure i have anything else to add.

How were you powering it, with the barrel adapter or POE in on PORT 1?

Did you try plugging your computer into a different port of the switch?

Does you computer show a link to it?

Is there possibly an IP conflict on your network as it would go back to the default 192.168.1.20 address?

Does your computer have an IP in that range to access it?

In reality we did no debugging of your problem so maybe the switch is fine?

We are powering with a barrel connector.

No IP conflict. We don't use the subnet at all. I was able to reach the Web interface before the update started? I have statically assigned myself 192.168.1.25.

Tried all different ports - it shows a link light on each port I try. Otherwise there is a light which never goes out on port 1.

The LED on port 1 is the power LED, we just use the RJ45 unused LED as the power LED.
Remember port 1 only supports POE "IN" so there was no other need for that LED on that port.
It only lights up when the switch is booted (takes about 30 seconds after you apply power) and the firmware is running so that means the switch is loaded.

So lets look at what we know.

You said that you did a factory default as all lights went green then red then you let up and it re-booted.

We know that you are getting a link from your computer when you plug into each port since the Link LED lights up and that LED is controlled by software.

This is what I would try:
1) Do the factory default again just to make sure it is defaulted.
2) After the default let it sit for about 30 seconds then power if off for 30 seconds and then power it back on.
NOTE: If you pull the barrel adapter and do not wait at least 5 seconds before you plug it back in it mess up the switch as it does not have enough time to power down all circuits as we have large CAPs there for all the POE stuff and your not powering anything.
3) I would use a Laptop and not go through your network (plug directly in) to eliminate something funky that you might miss on your network.
4) Double check your IP settings on your laptop (we all make dumb mistakes in the IT world, I do them all the time)
5) Ping 192.168.1.20 from your laptop and see if you can ping it.
6) Try the UI with your browser or Putty to "SSH"

From what you describe with the link state of each port and the LED on port 1 the switch is fine.
