ws-12-250-dc random reboots & sensor errors

Fri Jun 17, 2016 9:17 am

Ws 12-250-DC Brand new unit last week - feeding tower site with 48v DC. unit has been rebooting randomly. we installed FW 1.4.2 on 6-16-16 - still seeing the random reboot issue. I Don't think its heat related since it rebooted overnight last night and it was about 60 degrees. All poe devices are rebooting too.

Also - After firmware update the sensors are showing errors from time to time.

Here are some screen shots.

Any Suggestions?

That is a Rev E board which does not have the RF filtering now in the newer Rev F boards which means it will not work correctly near an FM broadcast tower.

Is this unit anywhere near an FM Broadcast tower?
viewtopic.php?f=17&t=1342

The Rev F boards are an attempt to help people using the DC switches on or near FM broadcast towers. We did the best we could in a LAB to improve their ability to deal with the FM noise found near these sites but just how successful these design changes will be is yet unknown. FM towers and similar noise in that frequency range is a difficult hurdle to deal with.

Please describe the site and how you are powering it.

Also do you have the switch's Earth Ground lug attached to the tower grounding system?
IMPORTANT TO BE THE TOWER GROUNDING SYSTEM.

Also very important if there is an electric service at this site are the service ground rods bonded to the tower grounding system (rods)? Should use at least #2 ground wire to bond them.

Please describe your grounding system.

Oh Yes, we are in downtown Indianapolis. heavy RF environment. we are on a 500' roof top inside of a fiberglass Nema box that is attached to the building. see attached pictures.

All DC powered - feeding tower site with 48v DC off of 4x 100ah batteries. using an iota 57v charger for the battery bank.

I do have a few Ethernet cables grounded to the building but not to the equipment.

I just purchased these unit from your website not even two weeks ago, can you RMA this unit for a rev F?

I can not really return it as it is a used switch which I could not do anything with.

Do you have other sites that you could use it at that is not near an FM Broadcast tower?

We have an announcement Post about this issue which it the very first TOP post
viewtopic.php?f=17&t=1342

Plus on the web store we told people that anywhere near FM Towers you want Rev F which would not start shipping until 2nd or 3rd week of May at the earliest.

Several people put order in before that but put in the comments section that they wanted to wait for Rev F as they were on FM sites so they shipped out later. Right now we are out of all WS-12-ANYTHING until the last week of this month.

This is not really a defect as the switch was not originally designed for FM Tower sites or places where AC grid power would be available but rather small OFF Grid sites on a mountain top that have no grid AC.

Our AC models were tested to work at FM tower sites as we would think that those types of sites would have access to grid power and backup generators.

I see that you do not have the Switch Ground Lug attached to anything?

You do realize that unless that lug is attached to Earth Ground the switch has no access to Earth Ground which could cause it problems.

Plus you want to make sure that the Tower or Pipe on the roof has a ground wire (suggest #2 Green) run from the Tower/Pipe to your box where you should have a ground bus that connects to the switch lug and is also bonded to your AC Earth Ground or building grounding system/rods.

Using ESD TOughCable and Ends is useless if there is no access to Earth Ground and infact Static and ESD would be more prone to jump into the DC digital ground and cause noise in your switch.

DC powered Electronics need access to Earth Ground which is why they have a Ground Lug.
