WS-12-250-DC reset it's self to factory defaults

Thu Apr 13, 2017 12:20 pm

We have had this switch in service for a couple months with no issues. Software is 1.4.6. We go to the site yesterday to find that the switch had reset it's self to factory defaults. No storms, weather, etc. What would cause this?

If power is cut and applied in rapid succession it can default it.

Other than that I have no idea.

In situations like this you need to eliminate the cause.

So what I would do is program up a spare and replace it. If it happens to the spare the odds are something at the site is causing it.

If it does not happen with the spare then maybe there is something with the switch.

Also poor grounding can cause this, this is why for 3+ years all I do is preach grounding as it seems like a very hard concept for people to wrap their minds around.

Example of what I hear all the time when I question their grounding:
The tower has 2 or 3 good ground rods.
The electrical service has 2 good ground rods.
Everything is grounded it is not the grounding.

So I ask if the tower ground rods are bonded (connected to each other) to the service ground rods:
They say no, ground is ground and repeat how many ground rods they have and say everything is grounded good.

At this point I know it is an uphill battle and I my day is going to suck.

Grounding is being discussed over here in this thread today if anyone is interested: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=2675#p18661

And there is always these great posts:

I love it when I ask people if they read my grounding posts and they say YES we do our grounding this way. And then I ask questions about their grounding system and there is no ground wire bonding their service ground rods to their tower ground rods. Then I find out there is no dedicated ground wire running up the tower to their equipment. :headb:

But they do their grounding EXACTLY like I do......well small parts of it so that is good enough.

Not saying your issue is grounding but ground current can cause your device to default and many other weird issues.
like I said I would eliminate the cause by trying a swap of the switch and see if the new switch does the same thing.
