Drain wire on both side of the RJ45 connectors

Mon Apr 17, 2017 7:09 am

Hello,

I would like to know what is proper way of using the drain wire on shielded connectors.

Some people recommend to only attach the drain wire a one end of the cable to prevent grounding loop, others say its best to have both side of the cable connected to the drain wire so I am confused.

You crimp both sides.

Since UBNT and a lot of other manufacturers bond DC negative to AC Earth Ground the ground current will flow across your Ethernet cable, the ESD drain wire helps provide another path that will not fry something.

To prevent ground current flow across your Ethernet Cable on towers you are supposed to make sure your tower ground rods are bonded to your electrical service ground rods. - VERY IMPORTANT.
