What is the proper way to setup the management network?

I have "lost" several switches now trying to convert them from U management to T management.

For example, they will be on VLAN 1 U for management. I want to convert the site to T - 56 for management. I am sending the traffic inbound to the switch as T-56. I put the VLAN into the switch as T and I can T my devices and talk to them.

Then I try to change the Management VLAN to T-56 and I lose communication with the switch AND it never rolls back either =\

I like to use untag for management VLAN. It's help to not loose access toswitchs if those have a different management vlan id or if you want to change it.

The down aide is that 802.1p for layer 2 QoS need a VLAN tag si no way to use higher priority for management vlan unless using DiffServ (DSCP) .
