Dead WS-12-DC

Sat Feb 03, 2018 7:55 am

We have what appears to be a dead WS-12-DC. When powered up from a 48V power source the power light and fan come on. I have tried to reset the unit to factory default using two methods - (a) depressing the reset button while the power is on and waiting for the lights to cycle, and (b) depressing the reset button, switching the power on and holding the button down for 20 secs. I assume that the reset button is the unmarked button next to the power light on the front of the unit. Nothing happens and there are no lights when an ethernet cable is connected to any of the ports.

The most likely explanation is a blown fuse for the circuit board. The fault occurred when the batteries feeding a 12 to 48V DC converter ran down. Normally the fuse between the batteries and the converter will go first, but not on this occasion.

We are based in the UK. Is there any way of getting the unit repaired locally? It isn't worth shipping it back to the US for repair.

Have you tried seeing what's coming out over the console?

Settings are 115200,8,n,1, let me know (or search the fora) if you need a little more guidance, happy to help

We tried accessing the unit through the serial port but didn't get any response. That was before attempting to reset the unit. Could the reset allow access via the serial port but not via a regular Ethernet port? In any case, I am not convinced that the reset attempt has done anything at all as there was no apparent response.

If you're hooked up to the console and you don't get a boot crawl, the unit needs to be RMA'd, unfortunately.

We will test again but, as I said, I think it is dead. But RMA to where? It isn't worth the hassle of shipping, customs, etc back to the US. Is anywhere in Europe possible? We got it from a distributor (LinITX) in the UK but I assume that they don't have any authorised repair capability. Some option for repair this side of the Atlantic would be useful for many of us.

You can send back to us postal mail which is inexpensive and no customs duties or taxes into the USA

If it is failure or defect we will fix and ship back free

If it is Damaged then there will be a fee for repair, DHL shipping back to you, and customs and VAT on the repair fee only into your country.

No we do not have a repair center in Europe "yet" we are looking into this sometime this year.

There is a shop in Denmark who we're working with at the moment. I will make contact with him this week and see if he's all set to start accepting repairs, but it's possible that arrangements can be made.

I have been preoccupied with other things. Any response from Denmark?

You may be right about the principle of shipping things to the US by post. In my experience the practice of dealing with postal services is rather different. Most things, especially metal objects, are potentially dangerous for one reason or another - but I will investigate.

No response from DK as yet, unfortunately.. They only love us when something of theirs breaks :Cry2:

How'd you do looking into postal shipping?
