Ja, I thought the same thing when I watched their Undercover Boss episode. That's quite the rat's nest of wiring running up to the roof. In the episode, the installer complained that the sales guys don't explain to the homeowner what the mini-POP install entails.

What equipment are they (Vivint) using?

Aren't they using some quantenna deal? I remember reading some press about a 4x4 solution they were using to offer those speeds.

I read that it was a quantenna based device for the repeater. This model is easily done today with available gear ( I do it ) but the licensed PTMP backhaul is the issue.

I'd love to see a small 24Ghz solution, like an AF24X, or a licensed 6/11/18ghz something.

Vivint is is burning up investment money building these on spec. They install a micro-pop where they think will work and then market the area. I guess they are way upside down in the wireless market at this point.

I'm looking forward to doing a few sites with an AF5X w/ the 23dBi AF dish and a handful of small AC sectors.

Wouldn't all the customers be down during a rainstorm with 28Ghz? Here in FL I can imagine a 1500 home community of retiree's going crazy because rain fade caused them to lose service every afternoon and for a pretty long time on some days.

28Ghz less so than 24Ghz, but yeah it will fade.

I think 24Ghz+ has a bit of a bad rap because though it does fade, it's really predictable.

Also, these frequencies don't need massive dishes for decent gain. An 18" dish in 24Ghz is nearly 40dBi, and with a tiny fresnel you can co-locate easier.

If I had an AF24X at ~$500, paired with a 20" dish, I'd be doing this model all day long. A little GPS sync and I'd have tower sites that looked like they were straight out of India with AF24X+dish PTPs as tight as they could fit haha!
