GPON

Interesting, Mikrotik just released a GPON ONU SFP module. Wonder if this means we will see an OLT module to pair with a CCR? Or a dedicated OLT unit...

...noticed that too. Wonder if the idea was just to make their product an easy choice for customer end of FTTH GPON installations.

I'd be interested in the other end equipment as well since there are some applications in our world where GPON might make sense (e.g. municipal WiFi installations - less fiber used to support multiple APs without the complexity, cost, and inter-dependence of typical Ethernet fiber topologies - e.g. ring, star, etc.).

I'm warming to GPON. I have a few places I could do a GPON ring and think it could be very effective if the equipment were inexpensive enough

The SFP only is the price of a Huawei or ZTE GPON router with wireless and POTS (FXS). Cost too much for residentials and small buisness services.

Mike, can you share the models?

Exemple, the Huawei HG8245 include 2 POTS, 4 GE and wireless and cost between 60 and 80$. This could be copies but anyway, you can find lot of device in the same price range in China. Anyway, it's not like Mikrotik is made is USA or Canada so I think the GPON SFP cost a lot when every ONT I've seen on the market have it integreted directly on the device (no SFP to add).

Exemple for commercial ONT, Huawei MA5675 or MA5675m with 4 or 8 POTS, 4GE and wireless for around 120$.

If netonix wanted to go to the FTTx market, I'm sure the could have a CAPs with GPON port as WAN. I even saw device with bot GPON and ethernet ports so you don't have to use several device as CPE. Anyway, it's a step in the good direction for Tik since I see a lot of WISP looking or trying the FTTx market but I expect more competitive price from Tik.
