WS-6-MINI 24V 0.75A on port 2 ?

Sat Oct 31, 2015 8:19 am

Isn't it possible to have 24 0.75A on port 2 of the WS-6-MINI ? Or isn't it controlled by software (It's possible on WS-8/12-250-AC)

Since I have to power the WS-6-MINI with a PoE brick (I use port 1 for management port) I do only have 5 remaining ports and only 4 if I use Rockets, Nanos, etc.
They don't like to be powered with 24VH 1.5A (They just factory defaults)

EdgeRouter X runs fine on port 2 (but I'm a little concerned that it is over powered ?)

Dave, I think you need to explain this better. Port 1 takes in 48VH and port 2 doesn't just pass it through. It has the option of 24VH or 0V. The difference between 24V and 24VH is data pairs 1,2 & 3,6 also carry power. Some kit can ignore the power on the data pairs 1,2 & 3,6 by nature of the DC isolation of ethernet transformers. Other kit, as you found utilize the DC bias for remote reset. On the UBNT PoE bricks that sport remote reset, they provide power through a current limiting resistor whereas port 2 is unfettered.

But to answer your question, 24V or 48V on just the pairs 4,5 & 7,8 and not on data pairs 1,2 & 3,6 for port 2 is not an option. Chris has posted a few warnings that misusing port 2 can have dire consequences. That said, if you didn't experience immediate meltdown, I think it will be fine and doubt there would be any long term negative effect.

Sorry, I was in-correct, getting my different switch models mixed up...errr..

With the WS-6-MINI, port 2 is only selectable for 24VH or 48VH. We didn't have enough room on the board to add separate mosfet circuits to allow 24V or 48V, so we decided to make it only support 24VH , 48VH, or OFF.

As a note of caution, if you hook up a 24V device & apply 24VH, you will most likely damage the device & switch.
