SFP/Fiber Link Setting

Thu Feb 04, 2016 1:26 pm

I've got a MAXXWAVE SFP in slot 13 of a WS-12-250-DC. I noticed the only options are Auto/1G. Why is there no option for 100FDX?

Because our SFP ports only support AUTO and 1G

Not even sure if 100M SFP modules will work in our switch but if they do it would be under the AUTO setting.

Did you try AUTO becuase if it did not work under AUTO then it probably will not work. Now "maybe" another 100M SFP module will I do not know.

I have a Gigabit module. Assumed *duck* it would drop to 100Meg on auto, but apparently not. I'm working on ordering 100meg modules now to test.

Lets us know but as I said i am not so sure 100M SFP modules will work.

Not too many people want 100M fiber anymore?

Apparently Level3 likes to spend money on 100Meg optical interfaces on their equipment *sigh*

Unless they have long runs of MMF instead of SMF and they don't need the speed.

Anyway, on auto, if the other side is force at 100/full like it's often the case with carrier, your switch won't be able to detect the duplex and the device will chose the default value (half) so you would have collision.

So, the WS-12-250-DC has different port options than the WS-12-250-AC?

We have two of the WS-12-250-AC deployed (1.3.9 firmware) using 100Mb optics (Avago) and they work fine set to Auto (have some DC models just not deployed yet).

I just checked on one of them and the drop-down for the SFP port settings shows: Auto, Auto-SFP, 1G, 100M-F, 100M-H, 10M-F, and 10M-F.

As for 100Mb, we have a ton of it... 350+ locations with at least a pair of 100Mb ports and another 40+ with anywhere from 8 to 16 of the 100Mb fiber ports. With that many things it will be a while until they get cycle-replaced to gigabit (and you may well imagine that some planning and sequencing of the changes will be involved!).

No, it is the same board in the WS-12-DC, WS-12-250-DC, WS-12-250-AC, WS-12-400-AC (jusr extra fan circuit), and WS-10-250-AC (just not all parts are stuffed).

You are saying you are seeing all those options on an SFP drop down?

What browser are you using?

Try it with Chrome. Using anything other than Auto, and 1G on an AFP port is not supported regardless if the browser has a bug and using them will cause issues.

Agreed, I would normally set it to Auto and it should work.

It was IE10 that showed all of the options (why the heck I clicked on that instead of Firefox like usual I have no idea). In any case, both Firefox and Chrome show the correct options.

Interestingly, I noticed that one of the switches was running 100Mb with the SFP port set to 1G... I changed it to Auto and hit apply. The switch lost connection and never came back. It will be receiving a field visit shortly...
