Switch is too deep for our tower enclosure

Sat Nov 08, 2014 11:56 am

So we've received our first two switches and these things are SOLID. We love the web interface and they seem like they're going to last awhile. The one major concern I have now is how this will fit into our tower boxes which are quite small. Right now we have usually a Mikrotik router and toughswitches or POE injectors and they all fit because they're not very deep. This switch is about twice as deep as anything else in our boxes which means we need to add larger, more expensive boxes at each site now or we can't use these.

Honestly, I'm leaning towards not using these since we want to locate our POE switch at the top since we do mostly grain elevators and water towers and then we want to run fiber down with power to our battery backup and router. This means we need the smallest possible box at the top and we were hoping this would fit the bill but it is far too deep to fit in any of our smaller enclosures. Any plans for a less deep version of this product that we could use where we have limited space up top? Thanks

We have an 8 port coming out in December that is almost the same size as the ToughSwitch.
8 7/8" wide by 7 1/4" deep

There is a picture on here somewhere of what they will look like.

The Nice thing about them is all cables come out the front including AC socket so you can push the back against the inside of the box.

The sides need room for air vents and fan outlet.

This is a rendering of the 8 port DC version but the AC version is very similar

The 12 port is not as deep as the 24.

To be specific, the 24 port unit is 14.5 inches deep, while the 12 port is 9.5 inches deep, and the 8 port will be 7.25 inches deep.

Yes, and the 12 and 24 have the power connector on the back that adds a bit more. Swapping it out for a right-angle plug can reduce it a little.

Yes, I thought the 24 port I ordered would be 9 inches deep because that's what the specs say on the website for the information page. I did not grab the dimensions from the spec sheet like I should have so my switches are 14" deep instead of the 9" I thought. Please correct the dimensions on the web page for the 24-port switches.

Even so, I would love to see the 12 port or 24 port version shrink their depth a little bit if possible but that could only come with time and ways to shrink the hardware inside I'm sure.

With the 8-port version, will that have an SFP port at all? Please say YES?! That way we could add these in a modular fashion by purchasing an 8 port then another one as we need to grow instead of 12 ports and 24 ports that won't fit in our boxes. We can fit multiple 8 ports in our boxes though with the dimensions you all specify. We love having the AC plug and ethernet ports coming out the front. It would be perfect with 1 or 2 SFP ports, 8 ethernet ports, and the AC plug all in front. What would be even better is getting the Tower Switch ready for us as soon as possible ;)

Do you have anticipated price for the 8-port switch? Can it be close to $200 hopefully?

Thank you

No, 8 port has no SFP ports
Maybe we will make one someday?

What will the dimensions be for the TowerSwitch with its hybrid fibre/copper cable?

I replaced two ToughSwitch Pro's with a 12 port WS in my data center and had trouble getting it in the rack amoungest the other cables because it was deeper than the TSP's in their rack mount.
If the 24 port is deeper (and it clearly is) you're going to need a lot bigger box!
We try to use the largest box I can, just makes it easier to work on later.
