I can't imagine this being successful in the US. The internet is more than just FB... A ton of infrastructure for social media I think. I think Netflix kills this concept in the US.
In countries without a lot of streaming media this might make a lot of sense.. It's almost 'AOL' like..

And they want to create Open source "kind" of wireless connectivity hardware to cut down the costs for telcos - ISPs - Wisps etc etc

Google also working on wireless connectivity for rural area in the Alphbet Fiber project.
