Fan failure?

One of my WS-10-250AC reported fan failure after aprox 14 days uptime. Log is showing: switch[749]: Warning: expected 1 fans but found 0

Firmware is 1.4.2 and i've already checked that fan is not stuck. I also adjusted those two screws for fan, but to no help. (it's turning freely, no resistance.

Any input?

So your description is lacking?

Does the fan run at all?

Did you just get a single random fan failure alert but fan appears to run?

Basically if the board temp is 40C or higher the fan should be running?

Fan was running when i set it up the first time, with no error massage at all.

After aprox 14 days i changed one antenna at the location and i desided to upgrade the switch to fw 1.4.2. After rebooting the log was showing the following: switch[749]: Warning: expected 1 fans but found 0

Now the fan is completly dead, after several reboots. It's not stuck, as the fan can easily be turned by hand.
As i said, i also loosend the screws just a little, but it made no difference. Temperature has been 75 degrees C, so something is wrong.

Have 10 other switches with fw 1.4.2 and no problems. started on 1.3.8 --- 1.3.9 ---1.4.0 then 1.4.2

Well then probably the fan has died, it happens sometimes?

I would swap the switch out with a spare as soon as possible to prevent possible damage from heat.

Options after that:
1) RMA the unit back to us - viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1259

I see your in Norway, do you have any spare switches?

I don't have any spare at this time. Ordered 10 more form the "local" dealer some 5 weeks ago, but they are also waiting for new supplys.
(You have to make more of these baby's ;-) )

Switch is now 18 days old since first startup. If im buing a new fan from your shop for $8 it will cost me another $32 in shipping + taxes to Norway.

This is not really about the money, but the fair thing (in my head) would be to send this replacement for free.
I see no point to RMA only for this, i hope you agree.

Also, it can be as simple as a bad connetion.
As long as i get your ok to open the cover and breaking the seal i will check this first.

In a perfect world where everyone's word is their bond but the problem with this is it becomes a slippery slope and once I treat one person a certain way I need to treat everyone the same way.

If I take one person at just their word they have a bad fan and I send them a new one then to be fair I have to do that for everyone.

I have tons of pictures of DOA RMA units totally destroyed from strikes that apparently we sent out from the factory in that condition that also somehow miraculously came with a full configuration. Sadly not everyone is 100% honest. And no we do not fix them for free.

What I need to do is get some EU Distributors to carry some spare parts?

Same thing with giving one person the right to open the warranty sticker, not fair unless I let everyone. We are considering removing that sticker and making an optional RMA process where the user can take it apart and know up front if there is visible damage and then giving them the option to simply purchase a replacement board saving everyone the time and money to ship it back for repair.

I know I need to work on this for you guys and come up with better options and I am putting a lot of thought into it.

Another option for now is we have the special where is you buy (4) boxes of RJ45 ESD Crimp Ends and shipping is FREE for your whole order.

There is a good chance this fan never worked and you were just unaware of it until you upgraded the firmware which makes it very apparent if it fails.

About 6 months to a year ago we had a dozen or so RMAs where the fan connectors were bad. We used to not check the fans at our testing stations where we serialize them but we do now. There is a couple posts on here about that.

How this happened was we ran out of fans that we normally order from the factory in China with a custom wire length and the connector installed. As a stop gap we ordered 3,000 fans from a US Distributor which came with the standard 12" wire and no connector. We manually cut the wire to length and put the connectors on with a hand crimp tool. As you can guess this was a very tedious job and there were mistakes and we did not test the fans or more accurately the connector installation. Some of the little crimp ends did not have connection with the wires.

Put up a screen shot today of of the Status Tab and the Device/Status Tab showing the MAC address this way I know it is working fine other that the fan then you can open it up and check fan connection. But remember the connector may look OK but the problem is one of the wires inside the plastic connector is not getting connection with the little metal crimp end. (probably)

Do you use ESD ends? Buy 4 boxes of our ends and a fan then shipping is FREE and when you get the fan swap it out and if that was the problem I will credit you back the cost of the fan?

Giving us the option to just buy the board, this would be sweet!!!! I could simply stock a new board and field replace... Amazing. No, other manufacturer is doing this, thinking out of the box. Sign me up.
