Question about the Status of RC Version Numbering

Fri May 12, 2017 5:48 am

Back in April there was a comment:

In fact after we release v1.4.7 we are no longer going to use RC and simply will add a "."# to the end

Just wondering what the current RC policy/status is. (Since it seems RC numbers are still being used in v1.4.8)

More specifically I'm wondering if the current 1.4.8 RC build are to be considered "stable" or beta. (Trying to establish upgrade policies for my production switches.)

Thanks.

Julian

1.4.8rc2 is a beta release, as ERPS is still a very young feature. if you're not using ERPS, 1.4.8rc2 should have no functional difference to 1.4.7 on all platforms other than the smart DC models (WS-8-150-DC, WS-12-250-DC, WS-26-500-DC) as there was a recent minor change in the fan control algorithm for those models.

1.4.7 is the firmware of record, currently. As of now, there are no plans to issue updates for this version, we consider it to be mature and stable.

We have changed our external version numbering to reflect common practices in the industry; RC versions are now exactly what they appear to be, release candidates, since there has been some confusion.

As always, maintaining good communication with us via these forums will help us help you with any software-related issues you might encounter (AFAIK, there shouldn't be any, but Murphy doesn't have a law for no reason).

Thanks!

HOWEVER if bugs are found in v1.4.7 they are fixed in v1.4.8rcX as v1.4.7 is now FINAL and dead to development.

So if you have an issue you should try v1.4.8rcX to see if that release fixes your issue and if it does not then report your suspected bug so we can address it to see if it is a bug or user error.

So constantly read the release notes in v1.4.8rcX as they are released and look for fixes that may pertain to you and if you find one you need to use v1.4.8rcX

Or if there is a security fix you SHOULD upgrade immediately.
