New WS-6-Mini Owner Needs Help

I just received the switch and with no information and my not being familiar with managed switches I need some assistance.

It is powered via port1 via a Ubiquity POE injector; I have successfully changed the IP so it is online.

I do not intend on activating any POE devices at this time so I will not power the ports but rather I want to use the switch as a Cat 5e cable range extender; a simple gigabit switch that is powered via POE.

Here are my questions;

1. How do I have to configure the switch for gigabit data pass-through? I have it online but search engines etc. often will not load, may load slow, and or simply time out.

2. How do I change login user: admin password: admin to something else.

3. How can I lower the MTU to 1428; LTE is MTU 1428 however the lowest I see in the setup is 1518.

4. is the http port TCP and UPD?

5. Is the https port TCP and UDP?

At this moment I cannot even open many sites including Google and those such as Ookla Speed test either don't load or are very slow to load often timing out. By comparison when testing on a different computer sitting next to is not being fed through the WS-6-Mini everything is fluid and fast. I have tried it on both Edge and Chrome with the same results.

After much delay I ran a series of Ookla Speed tests and the results are as follows after averaging 5 tests;

Ping: 35ms
DL: 91Mbps as long at it completes; often it times out or simply stops during the test.
UL: This is disturbing; always begins at 35Mbps plus however; it then gets slower and slower down to "only" .32Mbps and finally times out or I have to close it before completing the tests; every time. None of the other computers running the same test without the WS-6-Mini exhibit this behavior.

When I looked at the Port details;

Lan 1; my power in POE port shows in the error counter; Rx Filtered 2867

Lan 2; my only connected laptop for testing and setup shows in the error counter; Rx Drops 8 and Rx Filtered 12

I suspect that something is not configured for my application.

Your question really makes little sense?
This is probably because you set your MTU WAY TOO SMALL at 1428 *BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN*
Leave your MTU at the default 1528 *see below*

All 6 ports by default are configured for Auto detection as far as port speed.

I suggest you take 5 minutes and look at every tab and familiarize yourself with the switch UI

I am thinking you do not understand MTU, 1428 is way too small and will cause issues.
Leave the MTU at the default 1528

Http traffic is always TCP?
This is standard and would be handled no differently on our switch than any other device?

Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
TCP: Typically, HTTP uses TCP as its transport protocol. The well known TCP port for HTTP traffic is 80. A HTTP proxy often uses a different port; typical values are 81, 3128, 8000 and 8080. However, HTTP can use other transport protocols as well.

The Hyper Text Transport Protocol is a text-based request-response client-server protocol. A HTTP client (e.g. a web browser such as Mozilla) performs a HTTP request to a HTTP server (e.g. the Apache HTTP server), which in return will issue a HTTP response. The HTTP protocol header is text-based, where headers are written in text lines.

HTTP/1.1 allows for client-server connections to be pipelined, whereby multiple requests can be sent (often in the same packet), without waiting for a response from the server. The only restriction is the server MUST return the responses in the same order as they were received. This enables greater efficiency, especially on revalidation.

An encrypted variant named HTTPS is also available. This is often used where privacy of data is necessary, e.g. when using online banking.

The HTTPS protocol is in fact two protocols running on top of each other. The first protocol is a security protocol like SSL, TLS or PCT. The second protocol, which runs on top of this security protocol, is HTTP. The URLs starting with https:// really are only a shorthand notation for the end user. The web browser will read the URI scheme (https://), initiate the security protocol to the server, and once this secure connection is established, issue a HTTP request over it with the URI specified in the request.

You state that my question "makes no sense".
I was simply sharing that when I plug a device into this switch so as to test it the activity becomes very slow and or times out; I tried to share some examples. I also shared that if I take the switch out of the loop everything returned to normal.
Since I have not used a managed switch before I was suspecting that there is a configuration setting that I need to set.


MTU......
I understand a modest amount about it; our internet is Verizon 4g/LTE which has a MTU rate of 1428. As such our equipment has been set to this value and has operated in this manner for years. Now I this managed switch that has a minimum setting of 1518; it seems to me that this is not a good thing and good explain why when routing through the switch things become slow and or time out.

I was asking this only so I knew if I needed to address both protocols for port forwarding when I change the http/https port numbers

I would leave the MTU at the default (1528) as having a device in the middle with a larger MTU is not an issue. I would not believe that any network would run an MTU smaller than 1500 that is insane as the standard packet size used on the internet is 1500. If your MTU is set too small on the switch it would cause the behavior your describing.

Did you upgrade the firmware? Should be v1.4.7 or v1.4.8rcX

Did you make any changes other than the MTU (Which I would return to the default 1528)?

No changes; in fact it remains at the default 1528 MTU

I plug a laptop into port 2 and it is lethargic ... unplug it from the WW switch and back directly into my network and all is normal again

What is the MTU set to on your laptop nic?

And what version of firmware are you running?

I updated the FW before anything else based on Chris's directive; FW 4.8rc5

MTU on the laptop is Windows 10 default at 1500

Here is my understanding of MTU packet size.

LTE/4G transmits to me MTU1428 max including TCP overhead therefore the laptop being MTU1500 sees the incoming LTE/4G packet of 1428 or less migrates it migrates in without having to be broken up hence no issues however, outbound of anything greater than MTU1428 will be broken packets no greater than MTU1428.

Having shared this if I plugged the laptop into the switch everything gets slow and or times out however when plugged directly into out unmanaged Linksys switch the traffic is fast with no visible issues; our internal network has not changed in years.

I just started the laptop and plugged it into Port2; google would not load ... without touching the computer I moved to Port 3 google immediately loaded and then less than 5 seconds later I got the Huuum we cant reach screen.... then moved to Port 4 .. google loaded in 3-4 seconds ... then 4-5 seconds later with me touching "nothing" I again get the Humm we cant reach the page screen ... I did this on every port and the results are same.

Plug it in ..... google loads .... 4-5 seconds later the hum we cant load the page screen appears

If you plug your laptop into the Linksys can you ping the switch IP and then login to the switch UI?
