Fungus on SFP cage?

What would cause this?

Switch died last night! replaced it ant tech brought it in. Installed on MDU, 30th floor telecom closet.

That's pretty crazy looking - The greenish spots look like corrosion, to me, but not being able to look at it firsthand I can't be sure.

Any chance you'd be willing to send it in for a repair/postmortem?
