WS-12-250 DC !Enabling PoE power (24V) on port 1 (East 10.10

Mon Nov 27, 2017 5:17 am

Hi all,

Hope someone can help, we put together a couple of switches last Friday, both installations went well untill Saturday morning when everything went down on one of our base stations.

I thought it was out charging equipment originally (up time was about the same as if it was only plugged into batteries) as it was completely dead and our engineers tried a 24v power supply on-site to bypass our charging system but still no life, since I've had the switch back from our engineers its booted up fine on my desk so I started to check the logs.

Looks like it overheated somehow:

switch[803]: !Enabling PoE power (24V) on port 1 (East 10.10) due to Power Supply Thermal within specification
25/11/2017 13:36:30 Warning STP: set port 1 to discarding
25/11/2017 13:36:30 Warning Port: link state changed to 'down' on port 1
25/11/2017 13:36:30 Warning switch[803]: !Disabling PoE power on port 1 (East 10.10) due to Power Supply Thermal out of specification (heatsink 1 is 113 C)switch[803]: !Enabling PoE power (24V) on port 1 (East 10.10) due to Power Supply

Its strange as its in exactly the same outdoor box as the other one and is powering one PTP250 and 5 aps.

Any help would be gratefully apreciated.

Our SMART DC switches are designed to hook directly to the battery bank not power supplies and then hook your charging units also to the battery bank.

If the 24V power supply your tech was using was not able to handle around 500 watts of inrush for a a few micro seconds the power supply would have seen the WS-12-250-DC as a dead short and simply turned output power off. Most power supplies have dead short protection which simply means that if there is more power being draws than it is rated for it shuts off output power.

So if your tech tried to power the WS-12-250-DC switch with a 24V power supply that was only capable of say 250 watts and it has dead short protection (which most do) it simply would fail to power the switch at all.

As far as this error in the log I am not sure?

I would upgrade the switch to v1.4.8 on your bench.

Use a sufficient power supply or batteries and do the Bench Test as outlined here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2780#p19221

If it passes the bench test then I would say it is fine, if it fails or continues to throw this error I would RMA the unit.

Hi Sirhc

Thanks for your advice, I will go ahead and carry out the upgrade and test on our bench, I only use a small transformer PSU to program the switch up as its easier to pre-program these on my desk as our management vlans are on my PC and I have a link to the network there so I can test vlan programming before it leaves the office.

The switch was connected to 2x 15mah 12v batteries when it failed.

I will let you know how I get on.

Kind regards

Steff
