WS-12-250-AC - Mass AP reboots

On July 20th and now again today August 2nd I have had a mass reboot of Rocket5AC-Prisms attached to a WS-12-250-AC switch that is powered via a UPS.

What is odd is that not all the APs powered by this switch are rebooting. This is not a watchdog issue either. The switch is not crashing or rebooting either.

Could this be a faulty switch?

On July 20th the following suddenly rebooted.

Today August 2nd the following suddenly rebooted

USA-57SE-E
USA-57NW-W
USA-57NE-E

In both instances USA-24NW (RocketM2) did not reboot.

Any thoughts?

I will mention this switch has an uptime of 189 days and these dates listed are the only times anything like this has ever happened. Nothing on the tower has changed or been removed or added.

I have had these access points on this switch for well over a year and this has never happened before, but all of a sudden in the last 14 days it has happened twice.

So from what I can see you have 8 airMAX AC radios which can use peak 18+/- watts each and what looks like an airMAX n radio which can peak at 15+/- watts,

So 8 x 18 = 144 watts possible peak if all radios transmit at same time + 15 watts = 159 watts if they all transmit at the same time.

So if your network has grown subscribers this increases the ODDs of all radios transmitting at the same time it could just now be exhibiting itself.

This is a GUESS but a good guess probably.

I would upgrade to v1.5.0 and if it happens again then swap out with a switch less than a year old and see if problem goes away. If it does then either do the MOD yourself or RMA it and have us do a full check up on your switch, install all newer hardware MODs for between $25-$50.

As I do not have any WS-12-250AC switches on the shelf under a year old I will probably have to do an RMA or mod it myself.

What gauge wire do you suggest for the mod? As I have to open it to mod it and break the Warranty tape will that void my warranty for other issues?

We use 24AWG which is overkill.

If you switch needs the MOD it is already well over a year old and no longer under warranty anyway.

Mine does not seem to match the photo in the other thread. Mfg date of 2015.

Another way to tell is if you look at the board's "white stenciling", not the white rectangular box Labeled "CFG" which refers to the firmware configuration to be used, if the white Stenciling says Board Rev H it may already have the MOD done as we had the SMT shop start doing the modification mid production run. If it says Rev I then your good. If it is Rev G or below you need the MOD. The important thing is to take a wire from the one side of the R100 resistor "as shown in the picture below" to any DC negative source which many of the old board Revs have a GND Testpoint right there near the R100 resistor.

Notice below in the picture the imposed BLUE wire for 24V MOD.

Then notice the PURBLE block showing the ground MOD explained here:

NOTE: I would do the Ground MOD first as it is easier than trying to do it with the wire in your way.
