weird issues with wispswitch and unifi protect

Fri Aug 21, 2020 4:58 pm

So this is a strange one. I have a Ubiquiti Cloud Key plus Gen2 that runs unifi protect. I have had an issue at two sites now where I will get a reboot loop for the protect service, in which the service starts and runs for about fourteen seconds and restarts. The Cloud key is powered by a ubnt toughswitch/edgeswitch 8xp. The toughswitch has a trunk to a wispswitch 6 and has several other devices plugged into it. I tried powering the cloud key with an injector to mitigate any power issues that might have been happening on the toughswitch. NO effect. I uninstalled all devices one by one and when I got to the trunk port with the wispswitch, it alleviated the issue. Not sure what firmware is running on the switch as I'm not on site now. I will try to get that information. However, I just wanted to know if anybody else has had this issue with this particular setup. I have seen this exact issue on the ubnt forums but don't know if they are running netonix switches on the network. I'll check that too. Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Figured this out I think. Well I didn't figure it out but I upgraded WS6 to the latest firmware and also turned off UBNT discovery protocol. This seems to have fixed the issue. Hope this helps anyone else.

P.S. I was running FW 1.2.4 so I was pretty far behind.

I quit reading at "The Cloud key is powered by a ubnt toughswitch...."

I had the same issue with the discovery packets crashing Protect.

What? What a churlish response. Get off the forum if you're not going to be helpful. Just trying to put some puzzle pieces together and possibly save somebody time and effort...sheesh.

Did you happen to narrow it down to just this? The reason I ask is because the site where I fixed this, I still have a toughswitch running discovery protocol and I see no issues now. But I do have a second site where this is occuring and I have two WS 6 at that site but upgraded both and turned off discovery and it's still occuring. I do have multiple toughswitches at that location as well and I'd be willing to turn off discovery but I do like the feature.

ISTR the trouble stemmed from a bad Netonix implementation of the discovery protocol. I thought Ubiquiti would have fixed it on their end since it exposes a denial of service vector but then I really should not expect that much from Ubiquiti.

In my particular case, I had a very early pre-production Netonix MINI that cannot run newer firmware that I had dusted off when I needed a few more ports to install a camera. When I connected it to the network, the Ubiquiti discovery that was enabled did a DoS attack on my UniFi Protect causing it to crash within 20 seconds of starting, over and over. Disabling the Ubiquiti discovery on the MINI solved it.

I have not tried re-enabling it since to see if Ubiquiti patched the vulnerability but based on your experience, it appears they did not. If I ever have a need to DoS a Protect install, all I have to do is plug that old MINI into their network.

Interesting, thank you for the reply. I've turned off all ubnt discovery on the second network and am still seeing this exact issue, I guess it could be a faulty hard drive too.
