1.5.6 Mimosa A5c freeze reboot Netonix switch?

Tue Dec 29, 2020 6:16 pm

So I checked all my cables with a tester and they test good - but my Mimosa A5c seems to freak out my WS-8-150-DC - but not always.

I have like 7 of these deployed in the field.

Two sites now have exhibited the following symptoms.

Everything is fine and peachy keen until one day I start getting messages in my Netonix log that port x (Lerts say 5) has dropped to 100 meg Full duplex (or 1/2 duplex on one occasion).

If I bounce the port or POE bounce it (48V) - it tried to negotiate at a gig but fails and then goes to 100. If I run a cable test - the whole switch freezes and reboots until you remove the cable for POE form the Netonix.

I have had this happen on two switches with repeatable results.

Last time happened just a day or two ago - I went onsite, and plugged in a console cable, and an Ethernet cable. Console would NOT RESPOND until i removed the POE cable from port 5.

Plug back in port 5 - console stops responding! Unplug - it is fine.

In the end I have swapped to the Mimosa POE Injector and all is well.

As I said before - this is the 2nd location that I have had this same repeatable result at.

5 other locations all set up the same - do not have this issue. So weird.

I did at one point reboot the switch and plugged in the AP cable to see if on boot it would work / auto negotiate - If I forced to a gig - it would bounce all of the time.

Are there logs I can pull / info that I should look for ?

Here are some logs - but they dont show much:

The last bits of the port up and down are me moving the POE Injector so that it sat in the cab just right.

Also, there is some VLAN changes that are in there that have nothing to do with my question.

Re: 1.5.6 Mimosa A5c freeze reboot Netonix switch?

Tue Dec 29, 2020 7:44 pm

This is the time of the year when fog/rain/humidity/temperature can start causing all kinds of condensation related issues.

Over the years I had not gotten bitten by it, but I always "tried" to follow the "best practice" of cutting a small slit in the outer sheath of Cat5 (parallel to the conductors to reduce the chance of slitting them) at its lowest point as a place for the accumulated water to drain.

Yeah, but sometimes I got lazy. So this fall, in a second story equipment room, I was moving some cables around and my fingers got wet ??? I'm looking all over the ceiling and down the rails of the rack ... all dry.

These cable ran from inside a Power Beam 5AC down a 20' mask, then into a cable chase going down into the crawl space and back up 2 stories and across 20' of horizontal length before getting to the rack. And it had been working fine for a couple of years.

Well, I crawled to the lowest point, slit the cable sheath, and a bunch of water poured out.

Indeed, water finds its own level.

I will check that - but we used Shireen DC2042 Cat 6 outdoor rated shielded w/ gel tape - so it should stop any water -

But a good thing to check -

Oh and I will also say that the Netonix "Cable test" passes when I have the Mimosa POE plugged in, and disable POE output from the Netonix.

So, checked everything out today - all cables clean and no water - cable tests are good - I left it in the mimosa POE as I need it stable over the weekend....

Did I read somewhere that Mimosa AP's are kinda odd in how they handle power? And Netonix had to do something special?

I do need some feedback from Netonix on this / things to try as I want these units and locations to be stable and all the same if possible.

Maybe sirhc has some insights?

Sounds like you checked off the normal issues. :)

I guess when I look back at your first post, the one thing that stands out is the console interruption when 48V POE is powering Mimosa A5c. I can't speak for the WS-8 , but the WS-12 I believe have their own DC-DC regulator off of the +48V bus. Would seem like, for instance an unusually high current load on the POE / +48V bus, would have to pull waaay down for that to be the cause of "turning off" the serial chip, and then the switch processor would likely be rebooting as well.

Would it be possible to see what the main +48V supply is showing on the Status page with and without the troubled A5c plugged in? And what about the POE current draw on the port itself compared to those that are still working?

The other thing that could affect the serial connection would be some kind of ground issue, since the serial date line is referenced to ground. If WS needed special consideration to make A5c work, the way is handles its shield ground would be my guess. I think you're right to ask sirhc or Dave.

So of course - I dont have voltage graphs when this happened - They exist now! (Although may not have mattered as you dont get any data from it snmp or otherwise when in that state.)

Here are some snips of status (Device) page now (no POE on port 5 for the AP)
And the status page (Main) showing current draw - currently 2 BH's that are Mimosa B24's.

Heck - last picture is current draw form a working site with port 5 powering the Mimosa A5c:

I will say that the wattage seemed to peak when I took this last pic (good as far as I am concerned)

Why not use 48 VH? Use it and see all your problems will go away

The WS-8-150-DC does not support 48VH on port 5 - See pics.

I could give that a try I suppose and swap for port 1 -

Why do you say this however? What is the thinking? That the 48V (low / normal) does not have enough juice to run the A5c? Or that 48VH sends power through more wires on the cable?

From another post (viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2943) :
"But yes the MAIN difference between 48V and 48VH as Les said is 8 wires verses 4 wires caring power."

Dont want to just try this and smoke my A5c!

:P

My concern is that something is causing the Netonix to freeze when the A5c is doing "something" - and not sure that is - but I can re-produce it. If I do however it will take the sit off line -

I really want to nail this down as I currently only 1 wireless customer and an Ethernet customer off this location. So the sooner I get the solution the better!

I did find this about Mimosa

viewtopic.php?f=17&t=5845&p=31124&hilit=48VH+mimosa#p31124:

"48VH is for radios like UBNT airFIBERS and will also work with some MIMOSA and UBNT AFX radios as well as some specialized cameras that need power on all 4 pair for things like pan tilt motors, heaters, and lights.

Again read and learn more about "active" and "passive" POE but if your device powers up in an active POE 802.3af/at switch then you would want 48V not 24V as active POE switches do not deliver 24V."

Sill it scares me - anyone out there using 48VH for Mimosa A5c's that can confirm it works?

Yes I am using b5 b5c and a5 series as 48VH.
You can check it from the link.
