OK on that switch, see if you can enter into a serial terminal to access it. You can use PuTTY, HyperTerminal, etc.
Then click enter a few times and send me a screenshot of what you see.

The tool worked great, except now my switch is having an identity crisis. I used it on a WS-12-250-DC, but it now thinks it's a WS-26-500-DC. Is there an alternate recovery file I need to use, or a command line config setting I can change to correct this?

I went ahead and did a firmware update with the same firmware version from the web interface, and now it's back to normal.

How do I know when the recovery tool has completed it's work?

I have a WS-12-250-DC switch that we placed into service at one of our remote sites and it failed approximately 8 hours later. The switch was replaced with a spare and I am in the process of trying to resurrect the failed switch.

Trying to connect via the serial port does not elicit any response from the CLI. I am using puTTY and have double checked my COM settings (115,200 8 N 1), powered the switch off/on several times. No text in puTTY and no response to any carriage returns. I was expecting to see some messages as the switch booted. Also, when the switch powers up, the fan runs at full speed and does not either slow down or turn off.

I am now on my second try with the recovery tool but I am unsure if the switch is responding to the recovery tool.

The recovery tool will actually tell you when it's finished in the Tool Progress output box.

The recovery tool is just an automated version of performing this recovery procedure manually, in case of a failed update or if the flash got corrupted some other way.

However, if the terminal does not respond at all when viewing output on PuTTY when the switch is turned on. Then the recovery tool can't help and the switch most likely needs to be RMA'd.

It could be, let's be sure though - try this:

1. Power down the switch completely.
2. Connect the serial cable to the console (if not connected already)
3. Launch PuTTY and open a session for the console (shutting down the recovery tool first if it's still active)
4. Power on the switch.

If there is no output on PuTTY after the switch has been booted for a few minutes, then it means something is wrong with the hardware.

Otherwise, if you see output, and you are able to interact with the switch to a small degree (even as simple as typing characters on the keyboard and seeing them show up on the screen) then it might mean I need to find out more about the switch's error state as it might need to be added to the Recovery Tool to help.
