Re: FTTH switches
That is the Planet I was referring to but I have not used their product. I only see them mentioned when high density SFP switches are discussed.

Re: FTTH switches
If I was only going to make ONE model I was thinking about a 12 port SFP with 2 SFP+ up link ports.
It would be SMALL chassis, smaller than the WS-12-250-AC Chassis but would have Long removable rack mount ears.
If I did something like that and sold it for $500ish dollars would yyou buy it and how many would you think you would need?

Re: FTTH switches
Chris,
I need a range of different models. The reason why I can do FTTH on limited budget is the gear we use and how we use it.
We don't install everywhere. Only when needed. It takes a little more work but we don't need CPE, splicing, switches (in large size) etc. to go into business.
Let us say we have several apartments. When we install fiber 10% is becoming customers. Later by later more and more is joining. So we start with 8 port switch. Swap that out for a 12 port, then 24 port etc.
Everytime we reuse switch ie. 8 port at new location. Everything is then one swapping around until business is up running and we can afford larger switches to start with.
That's why we need the different models. Also I don't want to need 48 ports and then have to install 4 x 12 port switches and link them together. Forget it then!
Also same interface all way around is preferable. I want to stick to one brand, not mix... To much support.
So in my case different models, maybe 8, 16, 24 and 48 port SFP switches. Else it's not interesting....

Problem is each model is around average of $250,000.00 to bring to market so your talking about $1,000,000 and we do not even know how many will sell.
I thought I would offer 1 model to start with that made sense as you said you would not need 24 and 48 to start with and at $500 I do not know what is out there that is a lot less expensive for smaller models?
If you could not start with one model then I do not think we are a viable solution as we just do not have the cash flow to come out with 4 models as we are still in the red with the POE switches. Maybe if we were in the black with POE we could extend out but we are not ready then.

I bet you guys can re-use a lot (chassis, entire software build) and get these to market at 1/2 that number. The choice to go with Vitesse gives you a ton software compatible switches and PHYs to mix and match so most of that software dev effort is already done. And an SFP* switch is certainly simpler than a multi-voltage, multi-standard PoE switch.
I think you sell yourself short. Your first gen products are killing and your engineers are now experts.

Re: FTTH switches
Lots of small operators are using Planet, this model specifically:

price is about $800

Re: FTTH switches
Great price at $800 honestly. I'd love to hear more about how you're implementing FTTH exactly @jjonson!

Re: FTTH switches
It's overkill, but to add perspective, I will be able to get D-Link 10G smart switches with 12 SFP+ ports for $1069 in a few months. So there is a ceiling on what these proposed switches are worth.
