Why do people keep saying this

I appreciate the "great" part - Thanks buddy!

And I LOVE wispwest I am just using his statement which he probably did not mean it that way but most people are asking me why we are so expensive as an example of the greater consensus about our prices.

Look our WS-24-400B is the same price as the EdgeSWITCH 24 500 watts at $549.95 but our switch powers airFIBER and provides passive current sensors

Yes our 8 port is $90 more than the ToughSWITCH Pro 8 port but look what you get for $90

If you want to wall mount the ToughSWITCH you need to buy my $30 wall mount bracket so now the price difference is $60 so lets look at what you get for that $60 more

Power Supply
TS8 - 150 watt rated for convection cooling
WS8 - 250 watt rated for convection cooling but we force air cool it to extend it's life.
I could buy a 150 watt for $10 less so $20 MSRP
**Remember we have to mark up to be able to provide Distributor pricing plus maintain percentage profit

Cooling
TS8 - no fan
WS8 - SUNON Vorpal bearing 40mm fan to extend the life of the switch and operate safely at 55C
NOTE: OUR COST ON THIS FAN IS ALMOST $5 which means $10 MSRP
**Remember we have to mark up to be able to provide Distributor pricing plus maintain percentage profit

Switch Core
TS8 - Broadcom BCM53118 which is listed under Broadcom SOHO Grade. SOHO stands for "SMALL HOME OFFICE" people.
WS8 - Vitesse VSC-742X Series which is in their Enterprise / Entry Level Carrier Grade
Cost Difference in the switch core about $5 so $10 MSRP
**Remember we have to mark up to be able to provide Distributor pricing plus maintain percentage profit

Buffer Pool
TS8 - 192K
WS8 - 4M

LAG
TS8 - N/A
WS8 - Static and LACP

IGMP Snooping
TS8 - N/A
WS8 - YES

VLAN
TS8 - dot1Q
WS8 - dot1Q / QinQ / And Trunking with lists with v1.3.0

CLI
TS8 - limited
WS8 - FULL CLI

SNMP
TS8 - VERY LIMITED
WS8 - FULL SNMP

Current Sensors
TS8 - N/A
WS8 - YES

Ability to power AF
TS8 - N/A
WS8 - YES

Port Isolation
TS8 - N/A
WS8 - YES

DHCP Snooping
TS8 - N/A
WS8 - YES

Storm Control
TS8 - N/A
WS8 - YES

Auto TFTP Backup
TS8 - N/A
WS8 - YES

SMTP Alerts
TS8 - N/A
WS8 - YES

RADIUS Authentication
TS8 - N/A
WS8 - YES

Historical Data
TS8 - WHen you log into the switch you can wait for it to populate
WS8 - Soon as you log in there is 1 hour of data for every port

Tech support
TS8-Email and Forums
WS8 - Email / Forums / And in an emergency you can call them 24/7

Look the list goes on, why do we have to cost the same or less than a TS8 when we do all this and more?

For what we offer we are NOT EXPENSIVE!!!! :headb:

I do not make a TON or have a private jet or NBA Team so I can not be charging an arm and a leg for them.

If you guys support us our volumes will go up and we will lower the price as soon as we can.

We can build a switch for $190 but it would be pretty much the same as a TS8 is that what people want us to build? :tounge:

The netonix solotion is nice but 4 x times the price of a powerbox.

I guess you don't always get what you pay for but you need to pay for what you get.

I know right!

If people compare apples to apples we are NOT expensive.

We have been tossing around building an economy switch designed from the ground up as inexpensively as possible. We actually have an 8 port designed with a complete BOM we could sell for $190 but it is basically the TS8 with our core.

Replaced the 250 watt with 150 watts - Saves $10

Removed the fan and support circuits - Saves $5

Removed the current and voltage sensors and all the related parts - Saves $10

Dropped down the memory and flash to the same level as the TS8 - Saves $5

Removed the console port (UART and discrete components along with connector) - Saves $10

Removed 48VH ports which saves about $5

Right there is $45 our cost which relates to $90 MSRP so if we took out this we are LESS than the price of a TS8

We are NOT expensive when you look at the "OPTIONS" added to the base model. If we went with the BCM-53118 we could save another $5 which puts us at $50 cost or $100 off MSRP which would put our switch at $179.95 so is this what we should build cause we can!

Switches are a MAJOR component in any networking infrastructure. That is one area you do not cheap out on switches, especially when powering mission critical hardware. We have Toughswitch Carriers, and purchased them because they were the latest and greatest when they came out. Now, a 400A is replacing them, and will allow me to toss the Exalt POE Brick as well as the AF5 brick going to my house and 86 the nasty trendnet switches we use for VLANs between POE switches. A freaking rats nest of nonsense. I mounted the 24 port and plan to move everything off of the old carriers and clean up the cabinet, and make it much, much more manageable. $550 for a high end switch is chicken crap money if you ask me when your customers, and your livelihood rely on it. Cheap insurance, and a hell of a lot more features. My .02.

I think it is silly to think this is expensive for what you get. Unless you just put the switch in and turn on the PoEs and forget about it, then it may not make sense. For what these things can do and will do with the new firmware I am thinking these are a steal! The only thing that can be somewhat compared to the wisp switch is the edge switch but since they are not made to be in harsher locations as most people probably are doing. I have an edgeswitch and you know where it is at? It is sitting in my closet taking care of running the cameras and the APs in the office. I have no use for it anywhere else really. Keep doing what you are doing. Unless you want to make a super cheap dumb PoE switch for the people that want to set and forget but I would think those are far and few in between.

Price wise, the WS-24 and the ES-24 may be the same but that's where the similarity ends. Both have features the other doesn't but the feature set of the ES seems less suited to WISPs. I am still in awe that Ubiquiti would market it as such. The limited temperature range, the busy UI with tiny font, the auto-PoE, no fan monitoring, etc. just don't suit WISPs as well as the WS.

Trying to compare the MINI to the TS, Tik, WIFI Texas, or Tycon switch is apples to oranges. There's just no comparison on feature set so why compare price?

I find it odd that some WISPs will spend thousands for a backhaul radio and cheap out on switch it is plugged into. Keep in mind that what brought people to Ubiquiti in the first place was price so it's not surprising that those same folks are price comparing now. Selling quality to cheapskates is harder. It's like trying to sell software on a FOSS forum.

Survey needs a forth option:
Build a more expensive "carrier grade" version.

Your switches are cheap but are also missing a key component which is redundant hot swap power supplies. The chassis should be priced in the $350-450 range with $150 - $200 power supplies.

I plus one on the power supplies. I was actually going to mention that in the what we should build next forum. I would not have that at all of my sites but if I am buying a 24 port switch chances are it is a core site so I would gladly pay for it.

I agree with most comments here and have said this to Chris on the phone. If you're going to build a carrier grade network, you don't put in $80 switches.... If you can't afford to do it, then don't do it right now.

Do it right, or don't do it. You'll save yourself headaches in the long and short run.

The Netonix switches are not expensive, they are priced just right.

I too would like to see a "carrier grade" "main POP" switch with dual redundant power supplies.
