Since you were very helpful to me the other day I thought I at least could repay the favor by posting some initial feedback. We just got in the first 4 units and began to bench test one of them. So far I am very impressed with the feature set. I like the priority shut down order. That could be very helpful in saving batteries. I also really appreciate the fact that these have STP built into them. Many of the other brands of similiar products only function as dumb switches at best.

As far as not receiving feedback from your customers I would consider that a good thing! As we all know from our call centers you only hear from the customers with problems. The only request I can think of at this point is a rack mount option for the 8-250-DC but I'm assuming you have future plans for that.

I do have one question? What is the consequence to plugging in a module that is already powered up? Coming from Canopy CMM's this has never been an issue and may be tough to "retrain" technicians to be more careful.




What input DC voltage you plan to use if using the WS-12-250-DC or WS-8-250-DC: 12/24/36/48/other
Most of our sites are 24v DC using a battery bank of 2-4 Deep Cycle batteries and a 24v 10 amp Charger. Some sites have 20 amp chargers when the battery bank is larger.

ON grid or OFF grid sites?
Most sites are on Grid. We do have 2 solar sites but do not yet have plans for these up there yet.

What do you plan to power with it?
Our primary use for these will be powering up UBNT Rockets for use as access points. Since the switch functions like a real switch we will probably replace the mikrotiks also that are currently being used as switches. Most backhauls are Rockets or Mikrotiks. So to start we will have 3 rocket AP's and 1-2 backhauls.

What type of boxes or sites will you install it at?
About half of our towers came with building at the base to put a rack. Other sites are using air conditioned outdoor cabinets.

What do think of the firmware options?
Not sure I understand the question, but upgrading the firmware was smooth and simple. So far I really like the GUI and the layout is easy to navigate.

Are there software or hardware features you feel are missing?
Haven't had it long enough to answer that question yet, but the feature set is VERY impressive and well thought out.

What are your impressions of your testing to date?
So far so good! My impressions are based on bench testing to this point. We ordered 4 of these to start and I hope to have them installed in a couple weeks. Tower crew is building a tower in the mountains and will be out of service for a while. Next week I'm on vacation so it may be a bit before they are operational.

You can "Mouse Over them" and a balloon will POP up telling you what they are.

PS = Power Smart which does a check for a cross short before applying POE power - I WOULD LEAVE THIS ON - Look at log entries to what it finds

FC = Flow Control - I WOULD LEAVE THIS ON
MC = Multicast - If you need it turn it on

I would explore each tab mousing over everything, and always click on little gears for additional functions
I would also note that there are graph options, look close at graphs

Ok got it. After my first post I decided to go ahead and test one on the tower here at the shop. It's got 3 rocket TI's plugged into it and so far so good. I really like the real time graphs per port. Very handy. I also really like the PIE chart that shows you which ports are using what. Very cool. I'll have to start working on some dude notifications for various issues. I mounted mine temporary style to a wall for the time being. There are 2 holes on opposite corners that made good zip tie holders until I can get a shelf put over there. :)

What is the temperature that will shut the unit down and which thermal device will activate that? I see several parts of this device being monitored. I'd like to setup the Dude to monitor the one that would shut the unit down and alert me if we approach that.

All the thermal sensors are used to adjust fans and to turn off POE ports if needed.

Those holes are to screw it to the wall - we included 2 screws for just that

I've now had about 24 hours with one of these running and I like it more and more as time goes on. The built in cable test is pretty handy! Especially with cable length. We don't document our heights very well and this could come in very helpful over the years. One of my 3 ap's won't run gigabit which is not a big deal but it's also showing some CRC errors on it. The cable test is telling me Abnormal Termination on pair 4. I'll have to get my climbers to investigate, but does that sound like reversed wires on the connector?
