Bonding two AF-5x Links

Fri Aug 14, 2015 2:01 pm

What do you guys think about bonding two AF-5x links together in parallel between two towers?

I have a site I need more bandwidth at.

Sounds amazing, especially if you have the spectrum to do so.

You can use LAG to bond 2 equal capacity links but keep in mind if their capacity varies too much you risk having issues.

And since the capacity will be less than the physical link state which is all Layer 2 is aware of you could have issues if you approach the aggregated capacity or one link's capacity dips too much.

You can use higher level 4 protocols such as OSPF as well

Bond the links if unequal capacity and aggregate them if equal capacity.

Advantage on either method is redundancy in case of a link failure and increased capacity when both are working.

As I said if they are of equal value LAG is an option but if the capacity varies you will run into trouble when traffic on one side exceeds the current capacity as Layer 2 is only physical link state aware.
