Scratch that. The switch that was working is now not. I just tried to enable 24V on three switchports, and it has been spinning for over 10 minutes now.

So, I decided to pull out yet another brand new WS-24-400A out of the box. I upgraded it to 1.3.8, uploaded the config, and it's now doing the same thing (becomes unresponsive when enabling power on a switchport).

It must be something in my config, but I have no idea what. I can email the config to you over email if you would like.

I have to go to a family function tonight but I need more information regarding your VLAN and IP configuration.

I assume you are saying when you apply you VLANs or IP address changes you lose access to the switch?

Please give more information as to what port your laptop is in and what IP address (relative to your provided IPs)

MY guess is you are losing connection to the switch because of your network changes rather they are VLAN or IP in nature I do not know.

It is relatively easy to diagnose what is happening.

v1.3.8 has a ridiculous time out until it reports it loses contact with switch (this was a bug introduced in v1.3.8) I think 30 seconds so please install v1.3.9rc7 as the time out was put back down to 5 seconds or less until it reports it loses contact with the switch.

Step 1:
Create a constant ping to your switch from your laptop by using command at dos prompt: "ping 192.168.1.20 -t"

Then make changes 1 at a time until your pings stop and you find your culprit as to what is causing you to lose contact with switch. My guess is either IP address or VLAN

Hi Chris,

Actually, the latest test is simply enabling/disabling power on one or more ports. Originally the problem manifested it's self when I was updating network/VLAN configurations, but now it's manifested it's self while pretty much doing any changes. Note that I do NOT lose ICMP connectivity to the switch when it becomes unresponsive.

Thanks,

Josh

Josh,

Please read what I said. Obviously you are losing connection with the switch when you make a change, what the change is we do not know.

I also stated that in v1.3.8 the UI has a bug where you can lose connection to the switch and not be reported for 30 to 60 seconds so you are not actually talking to the switch which could explain what your saying.

DEFAULT THE SWITCH

PLEASE UPGRADE TO V1.3.9rc7 which reduce the timeout that UI waits before it reports losing communications to the switch.

Create a constant ping to the switch from your laptop

Make changes 1 at a time until you no longer can ping the switch..

There are over 7,000 switches in service around the world, if their was a such a simple bug as your describing do you not think this forum would be blowing up by now?

So with that said we need to find what change you are doing that causes this behavior, my "guess" is your IP or VLAN configuration but we do not know.

Once you figure out what change causes this behavior we can address your config and figure out what your doing wrong.

Chris,

I did read your post. I read it several times.

I assume you are saying when you apply you VLANs or IP address changes you lose access to the switch?

No, as I stated, I am NOT making any networking related changes (VLAN/IP/etc) when the problem occurs. I don't see how your test (using a simple ping against the management interface) would be helpful here, since, as previously stated, the management interface is reachable (via ICMP) even when this issue occurs. The web interface just sits and spins, and I'm unable to SSH into the switch; BUT, it continues to respond to pings and forward switch traffic.

I'm not saying there is a simple bug. This is not the case or others would be complaining as well. There is obviously something in my particular configuration that is causing this problem.

I'm really not trying to be difficult here, but we are obviously misunderstanding one another.

Thanks.

Are you willing to load my config on a switch there to see if you can reproduce?

I'm going through the configuration piece by piece now, but it would be nice to know if you can re-produce using my exact config.

Send me an email with your config.
Tell me which port you are connecting with your laptop and what IP your laptop has.

I will try and get to this later today or in the morning.

make sure user name and password are default or provide to me

send to chris@netonix.com
