VLAN Trunk not working as expected

Thu Dec 24, 2015 4:58 pm

I have a bunch of VLANs in the network. This Netonix switch sits at our tower and I want it to basically pass all VLANs to/from all ports. I figured putting all the ports into Trunk would accomplish this. It does not. I hook my computer directly to a radio and set my computer to VLAN5 I can connect to the radio's management page on VLAN5. I then connect my laptop to a switch port and plug the radio into the switch and I loose the ability to connect to the radio's management page on VLAN5. Nothing has changed except plugging into the switch (instead of just using the radio power supply.

Do I need to do more than just place all the ports as trunk ports? The only other thing in the VLAN setup is the management VLAN1 is set to U for all ports - as defaulted.

Or, do I need to list out all my VLANs in the switch and U all the ports?

What version is the switch running? Please make sure it's running 1.3.8.
I think there were some issues with the trunking option in early versions.

To test, add all the vlan's (or at least some) and test to make sure it works as expected.

You can't have U on every VLAN, only 1 U or Q (not both) by port.

Yes you need to list all VLAN else, if not added to the switch, non existing VLAN on port will be dropped. VLAN should use T (tagged), not U. U is only for paquet without VLAN ID in the header so the're only 1 U VLAN by port.

OK, I have made some progress but am still stuck with administration of the switch. I will admit I am pretty smart with some stuff but for whatever reason, VLANs seem to not get through my thick skull...

I have the switch passing VLANs and all seems to be working there. However, I am not able to access the switch using VLAN5 - which is my management VLAN. Do I need to change the number in the "default" VLAN from 1 to 5 if I only want management access on VLAN5? I do not have any traffic passing through that is not part of one VLAN or another.

Here is my current setup. I am only using ports 1, 4, 5, 6, 7 I need the switch to answer a request to its IP on all 5 of those ports on VLAN5

Yes change it.

That top vlan is the management vlan and by default is set to 1 but you can change the ID to 5

Well, I finally got back up to my tower to do this. I can't make it work. I turn off my existing VLAN5, change the "Default" from 1 to 5, tag it for all my ports and set it. I can't connect on a device set to VLAN5. I must be doing something stupid.

I am plugging into port 8 with my computer set to VLAN5. Within the 60 second refresh, it will not make a connection to the switch.

For some reason, inserting a image is not working. Here is a link to it:

Tried in dropbox and google photos and neither will insert properly.

Still didn't work since it's not public.
Anyway. All you should have to do is set 5 in the very top "management" vlan section and don't change anything of the tagged or untagged ports.
This will move the management to VLAN 5 and nothing else will change. Now if you have a device that tags vlan 5 it will work.

Finally got to look at your picture.
You to delete the second from the top vlan "management" vlan 5 and just rename the default.
Also, you HAVE to have an untagged vlan on port 8 for your computer to be able to talk to the switch unless you computer is tagging vlan 5 and I doubt it is.

So set the default/management vlan to 5 at the top and set vlan 5 as a U (untagged on port) 8.
